Big Hairy Audacious Goals

Like any good start-up, we want to change the world by:

  • Catalyzing inclusive community planning, design and governance.

  • Motivating the very best in durable, attractive and resilient design for buildings, districts, parks and streets.

  • Disrupting local government purchasing on the front end with better RfPs and processes.

  • Raising the profile of smaller, innovative firms, organizations & pracitioners. Conventional advertising will not meet their needs.

  • Using GreaterPlaces' data to predict trends, tailor solutions, focus resources and connect people.

GreaterPlaces began as a book for solving problems in cities. But innovative cities need an equally innovative platform. So, we created GreaterPlaces.

GreaterPlaces' inspiration comes from interior design sites like Houzz & Architizer that have elevated the role of design and sustainability for homeowners and professionals alike.

The power of organized, visual examples, networked communities of peers and great ideas extends to communities as well as individual homes. We are proud to support civic innovators as they create greater places in ways big and small.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the site live?

Yes - GreaterPlaces is in "beta" mode to test content and advertising.

2)  How long does it take to upload my project?

A typical write up can take between 20-45 minutes (though less time if you have existing case studies or more time if you add new information).  Think about the amount of time you spend on powerpoints - this is way less!

3) What kinds of stories and projects are you looking for?

Our users are particularly interested in (1) fun ways to engage with the community, (2) tactical or small projects, and (3) examples of good urban design. However, any success story you have on community design, transportation, and governing is welcome to the growing collection of studies.

4)  How have people used GreaterPlaces?

Several communities have used our Kickstarter "Cards Against Urbanity" to create decks for their own city (Richmond VA) and host game night. Others have used the site to get examples for powerpoint presentations.  We use Twitter (@greaterplaces) as a quick way to communicate with users.

5)  Are you looking for investors?

Yes.  We are seeking seed funds to build out features and reach more civic innovators. We would love to find investors who love cities, real estate and/or transportation. Contact Lisa Nisenson to obtain an Executive Summary and other information.
